Gen. George Meade Takes Command (Pt. 1 of 2) (Virtual)

Gen. George Meade Takes Command (Pt. 1 of 2) (Virtual) Online

General George Meade is noted mainly as the general leading the Union forces at Gettysburg.  He was appointed to command the Army of the Potomac just three days before the battle and arrived on the battlefield after the first action on July 1, 1863. He organized his forces on favorable ground to fight an effective defensive battle against Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and repelled a series of massive assaults throughout the next two days. However, what is mainly overlooked is his extensive military career including the battles of Antietam and Chancellorsville – and this only part of this two-part lecture.

This talk is presented by Dr. Jennifer M. Murray,  Ass't. Professor of History, Dir. of the George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War at Shepherd University,  Shepherdstown, WV.  She is a military historian, with a specialization in the Civil War. She is currently working on a full-length biography of George Gordon Meade, tentatively titled Meade at War.  Dr. Murray returns to the NJCWRT with a reprisal of her successful 2023 and 2024 series that had over 125 participants for each of her lectures.

This program is presented as a public service by the North Jersey Civil War Round Table (NJCWRT) and will be part of a two-part series: Gen. George Meade Takes Command.
