Native Plants for Migratory Birds (Native Plant Society) In-Person
With Stephanie Punnett Program Director, Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary. Millions of acres of bird habitat are lost every year. Native plants provide more than just fruit, they are host plants for insects, such as caterpillars, that make up a huge portion of the diet of adult birds that are summer residents and their nestlings (which are fed exclusively insects with just a few exceptions), and for the migratory birds passing through. We'll focus on the native plants that provide fruit, are insect host plants, and provide nectar, and there are some unusual benefits of other native plants that are worthwhile to include. Learn some of the native plants you can plant in your yard that birds need to survive.
The Native Plant Soc. of NJ holds their monthly meetings with a guest speaker, followed by meeting discussion. NPS is a statewide non-profit organization dedicated to the appreciation, protection, and study of the native flora of New Jersey. Founded in 1985, their members include gardeners, horticulturists, naturalists, landscape designers, students, and native plant enthusiasts from all walks of life. Talks are open to all!
